Nice to welcome Pastor Sri Veerabathini from Florida and local Ministry Leader Jim Quayle to the California State Capitol. A privilege to be invited to deliver an invocation for the California State Board of Equalization's @boardofequalization first meeting of the year. This board oversees many important tax decisions for our state of almost 40 million people, and each of the board members are elected Constitutional Officers. Thankful also for the board members' warm welcome and kind words. “Someone here this morning needs Christ. Someone here needs to follow Him. Who this morning will accept Him? … You here this morning, wherever you are, Jesus is calling. Are you here this morning? We bid you come.” - Martin Luther King Jr, from sermon "Can A Christian Be a Communist?" delivered at Ebenezer Baptist Church. #MLKDay California State Capitol flags flying at half-mast in honor of Congressman and former State Senator and Assembly member Doug LaMalfa, who was called home to heaven this week. Encouraging to be invited by a group of California State Assembly Members to lead them in a Christ-centered Biblically-based prayer in the Capitol Rotunda just before the Governor’s State of the State Address. At California Governor Gavin Newsom’s State-of-the-State Speech My long-time friend Doug, aka Congressman Doug LaMalfa @repdouglamalfa was suddenly called home by the Lord early yesterday morning. Doug has had an enormous influence for good in my life. He and his wife and entire extended family have been dear friends and a great personal encouragement to me since I was in my early 30’s, when I began serving as the Pastor at their church and Doug was a local farmer. My wife and I and newborn baby were adjusting to moving from busy So-Cal to a rural small-town where we didn't know anyone, but we felt like they adopted us to care for us, which I will be forever grateful for. Our children played together and grew up together. When I moved on from there to start a new church in the Sacramento area, Doug was elected to the California State Assembly and invited me to visit with him at our Capitol, where we laughed together about him wearing a suit instead of jeans. Next thing I know, he asked me to serve as a full-time Pastor in the Capitol, which I have been doing now nonstop for 17 years. From the first day I began serving in the Capitol, Doug was a faithful participant in the weekly Legislators Bible Studies that I teach there. Over the years since, I marveled as God elevated him from our State Assembly, to our State Senate, then to U.S. Congress, where I’d see him talking one-on-one with Presidents (both parties) or disembarking from Air Force One. But any who really know him would agree that throughout his impressive career he maintained his bearings, stayed down to earth and genuine, kept his constant sense of humor and wit, and truly cared about people, even those who disagreed with him politically. He and I had countless conversations about God and his Word over the years, and I am at peace knowing that he was trusting in Jesus and well-prepared for this day. Thank you for everything Doug. I will sure miss you buddy, and I look forward to seeing you again in the next life. California State Senator Monique Limon was just sworn-in as the new Senate President Pro Tempore (leader) of the California State Senate. Let’s be praying for her, as God’s word says we should (1 Timothy 2:1-4). Have a Blessed and Happy New Year!
