Theology – or Knowing God?

I am troubled by my observation that many people (dare I say most people?) I have known who developed a strong interest in theology (literally meaning “the knowledge of God”)  also seemed to become disgustingly arrogant, judgmental, and unloving at the same time. Furthermore, their degree of offense in this regard seemed to grow in parallel to their growth in theological acumen. Why is this? Is the depravity of man so great that we cannot contain our pride even in the light of the glory of God Himself? We know that TRUE knowledge of God ALWAYS produces love (1 John 4:8 “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”). Therefore, I must conclude that many people who know theology – even good, correct, accurate, biblical theology – do not themselves know God. Or, at best, they are distracted from Him by their own sinful pride. May I always endeavor to know God, not just know … the knoweldge of …  God.
